Guzzi Pier Enrico

Pier Enrico Guzzi was born in Savigliano (Cuneo). He attended Primary and High School in Piemonte where he was living. Afterwards he moved to Rome where he had been living for seven years, studying and earning a degree in scenography. From 1970 he divided his time between scenography and a deep research to improve his pictorial technique. In 1971 he finally abandoned scenography for painting and began to exhibit in Italy and abroad. He attended special studies of the middle Ages and the first part of the Italian Renaissance, inspired by the “fresco” technique of Piero della Francesca. Whereas his technique dates back to XVI° century, his style is Surrealist. Surrealism originated in France in the 1920s and in the words of its main theorist, the writer André Breton, its aim is to “resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality”, and the ways in which this is achieved varied widely. Artists paint unnerving and illogical scenes with photographic precision, create strange creatures from collections of everyday objects, or develop techniques which allow the unconscious the express itself. The surrealist are particularly interested in psychoanalysis and the ideas of Freud. Their pictures, while figurative, represent an alien world, whose images range from dream-like serenity to nightmarish fantasy. It is not by chance that a painting by Guzzi was chosen for the cover of a psychology book used in the American Universities.
